Like all extracting, the ore will need to be heated until all the copper melts away from the ore. This would take energy and that energy might come from fossil fuels. And transporting the ores to the refineries would require vehicles which also run on fossil fuels.
I would also like to add that the huge [yes, miles wide] open cast mines are not a pretty sight and the slurry often contains toxic element which leaches into the surrounding landsite.
