Can someone clear this up for me...
Is an alkane an unsaturated hyrdrocarbon and an alkene a saturated hyrdrocarbon?

If not... whats' the different between saturated and unsaturated hyrdrocarbons and then whats with the alkanes and alkenes?!
I'm so confused!

alkanes are hydrocarbons with only single bonds, methane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane, etc

alkenes have a double bond, e.g. ethylene

alkynes, e.g. acetylene have a triple bond.

alkenes and alkynes can take up more hydrogen atoms by splitting the double/ triple bond, so they are described as unsaturated.
