Rebase the following percentage shares, after having removed Scala from the list.

Table 4 Shares of Cosmetics and Toiletries: 2004-2005

% total value 2004 2005

Unilever 30.00 ?
Procter & Gamble 25.00 ?
Henkel 10.00 ?
Italsilva 5.00 ?
Scala 5.00 x
Private label 8.00 ?
Others 17.00 ?

TOTAL 100.00 100.00

Without Scala, the figures will only add up to 95. To get them to add up to 100 again, you need to divide each figure by 95 and then multiply by 100.

For example Unilever's figure will be (30 95) x 100% = 31.58% (to 2 decimal paces)

Great answer from Chris.

Yes, many people have a fear of percentages but don't be afraid of them. A common sense approach works.

Suppose you took out everything except Scala. Scala would clearly be 100% of the remainder.

Suppose instead you took out everything except Scala (5) and Italsilva (5). You would have 10 parts in total. Scala would be 50% (5 parts out of 10) and Itsilva would be 50% (5 parts out of 10) .

Suppose instead you took out everything except Henkel, Itsilva and Scala. You'd have 20 parts. Henkel would be 10 parts out of 20 and would therefore be 50%. Italsilva would be 25% and Scala would be 25%.

Just apply the same principle in each case.
