Just wondering why The Beatles used the term Strawberry Fields. Having seen Strawberry fields they are not spectacular or worth writing about as compared to say Poppy or oil seed rape fields. What was so special about strawberry fields or was it just an attempt to be poetic

When John Lennon was a kid, he used to play in Strawberry field.
Strawberry Fields was an orphanage run by the Salvation Army that was located in Woolton, near John Lennon's home.  He used to go to an annual festival or picnic that they held there, and had happy memories of the place.
Also bear in mind the possibility (rumoured) that they may have been high as a kite when they visited or wrote about strawberry fields ?
yeah, i heard it was an LSD-induced hallucinogenic vision that inspired the song. Lest we forget, Lennon also sang "I am the ape man, I am the walrus"
