does the symbol for 'Nuclear' represent anything?

everyone knows the 'Nuclear' symbol. the yellow or black background with the 3 yellow or black chevrons (if that is what their called) situated symmetrically around a circle.

is there a reason for this design? does the design represent anything? or is it purely random?

It's supposed to represent radiation emanating from an atom. Read more about its origin here.
apparently they are changing it soon so it is more clear!
