I live in a block of flats that have recently suffered a bad fire completely destroying one side. The building has fire doors throughout with separate hallways between the communal stairwell and front doors of the separate flats. each flat has smoke alarms and the building is supposedly made with fire resistant materials and has separations in the structure to slow down the spread of fire and that is all the protection from fire. There are no extinguishers, fire alarm, sprinklers, fire exit or information on what to do in the event of a fire. What I want to know is if this is above, below or minimum requirements for fire safety in a 3 story wooden block of flats??

Should have gone to specsavers
well I live in a 3 storey flat pretty much the same and it has fire extinguishers, alarms etc, but I live above a restaurant so that may be why we have them. Do you have a company that manages the flats at all?
Knobster.....That's not helpful...!!!

I would say it was below reqirements. Are you in England?
4get....Is your flat made of wood????
Well seeing as There are no extinguishers, fire alarm, sprinklers, fire exit or information on what to do in the event of a fire.

In otherwords sweet FA then yes I think it is below requirements dont you
ummmmmmm no the post says 'the building is supposedly made with fire resistant materials' how is it made of wood??

To answer all yes a company does manage the site, I am in a part rent part buy system, the company is Southern Housing and the developers are Berkly Homes so be warned & yes I am in England & yes I live in a wood house, modern technology at its best or so I was told.

*fire regulations for 3 story flat made of wood*

whwre I live we have a management company where each flat pays money to them to pay for electric in hallway, any refurbishments and also the upkeep of fire safety equipment
ummmmm I was asking tommo 'how' it was I know he said it was
Contact Building Control at your LA.. they will be able to tell you the regs.... I think that a building over a certain nuber of habitable units would probably have to comply with Fire Regs quite strongly.... at least have extnguishers and signs to the exits etc. Is it stil lin the process of being built?

to nosha. The block that I live in and surrounding blocks are all finished as phase 1 but the development as a whole is still being built. Don't think a charred building is much of an advert though.
Id have thought that the Fire Officers in charge would be able to give you an idea of what alarms etc youd need to have.

I hope the flat residents have at least got basic smoke alarms. If you havent then call the local fire station they will usually send out some firefighters to check what you need and install any smoke alarms you require free of charge.

to redcrx. I have never been informed of who the fire officer is or even if there is one, again be warned of Southern housing, they just like collecting money. We do all have smoke alarms in or separate flats but we dont have one of those break glass alarms in the hallway, instead, whilst the building was burning a few of us ran around banging on doors untill everyone was out.
lol....got ya.

Took me a while though. I just read your answer 3 times....!!!!
fire officer at the fire station or the person who was in charge of the incident.
You wont have a fire officer at your flats.
take a look at this http://www.iomfire.com/fire_safe/forms/Flats%2 0Regs%201996.pdf

of course, be aware that if the fire alarms and extinguishers need checking or replacing or repairing then the flat owners will have to pay for it.
Question Author
oh right, I have tried to get hold of the local fire station but couldn't get hold of anyone as of yet and also trying to get hold of the right person at my local council but just keep getting past on to someone else. I kind get the feeling that authority figures just don't give a ****!
Question Author
we have smoke alarms but not main alarms and there is no such thing as a fire extinguisher in my block of flats
