In sci-fi films spaceships have an elaborate self-destruct system. I guess it's just a plot mechanism to build up tension.

Does anyone know whether modern-day nuclear subs have a self-destruct button? What about the space shuttle?

in short no.

there is no "self destruct button" on the sub. there are abort keys for launched missiles causing them to fall to sea.

the sub can be "self destroyed" by other means, by diving too deep etc.

Though only an intruder aboard would cause this, lets face it, more than unlikely,

Don't worry redhead, their very unlikely to attack you.
It would have been a blessing if the Kursk had had a self destruct button.
