40 centilitres = 40 one-hundredths of a litre. One hundredth of a litre is 10 millilitres, so 40 centilitres = 400 millilitres = 0.4 of a litre.
100 centilitres = 1 litre.
Not to be confused with a cubic centimetre (cm) or (cc) which is 1/10th of a centilitre.

40 centilitres equal
400cc (cm) or
2/5th's (0.4) of one litre.
