Tendons attach muscle to bone.
Muscles work in pairs (or more) called flexors and extensors. Flexors pull in such a way as to bend a joint and extensors straighten a joint. Depending on the amount of contraction in these muscles, the joint can be stabilised in any intermediate position. Without tendons, you would just collapse in a heap on the floor and be unable to move.
