What is Catnip?

Stupid as i may sound what is catnip and what does it do? Im not too familiar with cats so its always bugged me as to what it is/does? cheers

catnip is a plant with a small flower. It can be grown outside in pots or in the soil. Cat's love it. It can be dried and used to fill cat toys. They go mad for the smell of the leaves.

I think that it is an opiate. My cat was oblivious to it, but I know of cats that go nuts for it.

It is commonly called catmint. Cats rub themselves against it, they get high.
