Well fossils can be made in several ways. One key to a complete fossil still with soft parts is the absence of oxygen and correct PH, moisture and temperature levels. Therefore none of the soft parts will decay. Also fossils can be things which have been preserved naturally in things like amber and ice.

Oil is formed from dead animals which have been covered with layers of rock and put under pressure, in the absence of oxygen for a long time.

Wood is a commonly petrified material and petrified wood is fossilized wood.
