an electric kettle supplies 20,000J of energy to hear 0.5kg of water. what is the temperature change? the specific heat capacity of water is 4200J per kg per centigrade.

The specific heat capacity is 4200J per kg per degree.

That's 2100J per 0.5kg per degree

Or 21,000J per 0.5kg per 10°

The last bit of your post tells you the relationship between energy, mass, and temperature. Make t the subject and use it to plug the figures in and get the answer.

When I was at school we used the formula Q= MSѲ although I think it s seen more often now as Q=MS(∆T)
So just rearrange that formula to get ∆T = Q/MS and substitute in the given values for Q, M and S
