it's a device that generates an alternating-current signal, of any frequency from about 1 Hz up to about 50kHz normally. it's used for lots of things, what sort of context is this question in?

When I was an electronics apprentice we used to use frequency generators as a testing source or for calibration of electronic equipment. We had them that could generate right up to more than 20KHz. You can also use them to test your hearing by connecting one to a speaker. Turn the dial and find out the frequency at which the sound become inaudible. Chances are all the dogs are now barking too.
a frequenzy generator can be up to any frequenzy theoretically. naturally the higher the frequenzy the more complex and expensive but as i remember most go to like 100 KHz or 1 MHz.
