The PCR-RFLP was used to differentiate beteween samples of salmon and rainbow trout. What are the major reasons why PCR was used rather than isolating the mitochondrial dna and restricting it?

basically it was because i have been very busy what with this decimal coinage to get used to and i have been waiting for a man to convert my stove to north sea gas. all this on top of my hip as well and my home help has got lassa fever, thats the third one in as many weeks. if i had had the time i would have isolated and restricted the mitochondrial dna, but as i can hardly ever make it to the lavatory without fouling myself it wasn't the highest of my priorities. thanx for asking anyway.
i cannot see what relevance MR.PIPER'S problems have on the matter, if you had a bag fitted you would reduce your toilet problems 11fold, giving you more time on the job and you could have avoided having to go by the way of PCR which i thing is a cheap and nasty method, something akin to a shopping trolley with a crap wheel.
Its been over 10 years since I studied this but polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can use a tiny amount of DNA which is amplified to levels required by PAGE (poly acrylamide gel electophoresis). The use of the primer determines what bit of the DNA gets to be multiplied. The RFLP refers to the primer which is linked to the "genetic fingerprint" idea. So I guess they use PCR-RFLP because it is very specific and requires a very small amount of sample DNA.
