I seem to have ground to a halt on this one.
21ac Holiday spot visited by Shute? (7) ??A?U?E (the u may be wrong)
17d He observed dramatic values (8) ???T?N?E (the n may be wrong)
The u and n are correct if the answer to 27ac Motorway queen gets on the bypass for Scots guy,say (9) is mannequin - I get the first bit, just not sure about the 'quin'

Would be grateful for any help - many thanks in advance

21a Seaside?
17d Critique ??
Question Author
Thanks for your ideas octogenarian.
I like your idea of Seaside - it makes sense because of "on the beach" but I'm not sure about critique as that would leave 27ac ending with a q, which would be strange. I'll have another look at it.
Question Author
Just got 27ac mannering - Guy Mannering being a novel by Walter Scott. So that means 17d He observed dramatic values (8) is ???t?g?e. Not critique after all.
17d Montague ( C.E Montague wrote a book - Dramatic Values )
Question Author
Just in case anyone else is following this thread in days to come (which at the moment is me talking to myself - nothing new there) I have just worked out 17d Montague, who wrote "Dramatic Values" - isn't Google brilliant?
Question Author
Thanks Junkman, I think you probably beat me to it there - bit of a time delay.
