1a Earth C?A?B?R.
Replies seem to suggest CLABBER, which can mean mud as well as, more commonly, curdled milk.
My point is: Why does the compiler not make the clue "Mud" (instead of "Earth") or "Room" (to give the unambiguous answer CHAMBER, which fits the given letters just as easily?
I don't see it as a rewarding mental challenge when the answer is an extremely obscure word which, for most of us, is impossible to summon.

I agree. Every now and again there's the odd clue where there are either two or more possible answers and sometimes, like today, neither answer is really spot on. In this instance I went far clabber.

Too many ambiguous clues e.g. 93a Comfort (7) -- noun or verb? Same can be said for 39a, 63a, 64a, 108a, 117a, and 109d. I think this is either lazy or thoughtless compiling. Glad you agree my main point.
