....or Ile Maurice in French,which they sorta kinda speak there. I think it was a French depndency till quite recently?

Not quite French. It was French until 1810, when the British took it. The British kept the existing Frencn law and French as an official language together with English but not the French name, calling it Mauritius. It became independenjt in 1968.
