UK book for teenagers, probably published in UK around 1947. Hardback pale blue / turquoise cover.

Chapters include, 'The biter bit' and 'Cry of the Whip Poor Will' (and maybe 'You've been a long time a'comin').

Matt lived in a cave in the hills entered from the top. He had a few books on his shelf incl Plutarch's Lives. Once had a dry shave. Tied leather bags over his horse's hooves to confuse trackers. Had son of an Indian chief as a friend; saw the battle of Little Bighorn from a vantage point?

Really impressed me and I read it more than once.

But what is its title? TKS
