Is it possible to travel by boat to New York from Britain, spend a few days in New York, then travel back by sea.

The answer is yes - but you might have to stay more than a few days to fit in with the schedules

Cunard run trips, and a freighter may also be possible (but no cheaper)
The Cunard Liner Queen MAry 2 is one of the few that does a Transatlantic (and back) crossing.
It takes 6 days each way,so once you have arrived in New York you would have wait 12 days for the QM"2 to return.
