I need to travel from Nottingham to Kingston upon Thames and the route I have been told is to take M25 Junction 10, then the A3. Is the traffic still bad on M25 by about 7pm (on Friday)?

oh dear! Never mind, was contemplating whether to leave Notts at 4 or at 6.
Your best bet is to ask the AA for a route avoiding the M25 - it's busy more or less constantly, but Friday evening is worse than ever.
It will take at least 2 hours to do M1(M25 J21) to A3. It could be longer as there are roadworks on the M25 on that bit. It will take at least 2 hours M1 J25 to M25. Thats 4 hours, and you will probably have to allow another for hold ups, so thats 5 hours. You want to be leaving at 2pm! I used to do Paddock Wood in Kent to Northampton (in a truck). If I hadn't left by 1pm on a Friday afternoon, I waited 'til Saturday morning. Thats how bad the traffic is!!
If your arrival time isn't important, leave at 6 - it'll be much easier.

Left at 6 and got there at 9.15 so wasn't bad as I thought!
