19D epistle
E= english
ST = S(HOR)T heartlessly
PILE=STACK
16d DR = Doctor
IF = providing
FIELD = answer(?)

24a TARA was where Scarlett lived in "Gone with the Wind"
So if one(1) is inserted you get TIARA
Tara was the name of the plantation scarlett O'hara( in gone with the wind) was raised then add i (one) = Tiara

Thanks Mikejas for the answers and clear explanations.
19d as above but maybe filed = answer
Question Author
Thanks mutt53 for the answer and explanation. I must confess that I've never seen the film or read the book Gone with the Wind. A shameful admission, eh?
Just as a footnote to this thread, can anybody confirm that 20a ("Long period of time close to Ramadan") is YEARS (and why?), and also what's 18d - "Watch woodsman"? (H---E-, or H-S-E- if YEARS is correct)
20a = YEARN = year + N (last letter of Ramadan)
18d = HUNTER
Aaaaah... Cheers FabDad!
