Eggcup - up for the one rising. Egg as in egg on one's face. Gong i a slang word which is related to getting egg on one's face, but I think the wording is week.
OOps - weak
Prior in the sense of before. Ere is an old form of before, but haven't worked out the prelate bit yet
For eggcup, you can say "for one" to mean an example of something and that in turn can be "e.g." The George Cross is an award or a "gong" and the rising gives "up." Put them all together and you get e.g.GCup or EGGCUP.

Thank you both.
Bit of a stinker today methinks. Please put the title of the crossword as, eg, Times crossword 24,245, rather than just "explanations please". This enables those with the paper to identify , just as giving number of letters and any available letters enables those without to enjoy solving and helping.
You need to take the tips of deputisE foR prelatE .
