Another foul-up by the compiler? 27d asks for the "heroine of an epic poem by longfellow". answer seems to be hiawatha. who, of course, was MALE. is it too much to ask that these people doublecheck their work before posting it?

It's a common mistake. Not worth worrying about.
The compiler knows about all the cheating on AB and other sites.
Crossword has got so easy since the other compiler died. Also the MOS.
it is Hiawatha- she was an indian princess I am sure!
Hiawatha was male. It was Minnehaha who was female.
Hiawatha was a 16th century Native American teacher and Onondaga chieftain who was responsible bringing the 5 separate tribes beeing amalagamting into 1,the Iroquois.
Nothing else fits grid! Right or wrong it's Hiawatha.
Minnehaha was the lady as squarebear says. There was old Nokomis too.
Pocahontas was another Indian Lady but real and not a princess nor a heroine. She married John Rolfe and took the name Rebecca.
