thank you aeronut - unfortunately I have just inked in thingamajig -but your breakdown does seem correct.
I would go for 'gam' based on one definition of stick as 'informal term for the leg' (which is also the definition of gam), but as there is no crossing letter to settle it, we can both be right!
Well gam has a second meaning -to congregate, which might be what the setter was thinking of. Who knows?
I think that we are both right, but one of us is wrong:-))
