Comment on 15 was positive. I have a friend who is doing the quiz, and he queried it with the organiser, as there seemed to be an obvious answer. I hope the clues helped.

Would still appreciate any clues to help solve the following
two questions.

72. Broad row erupts at times with ham [7]

98. Original place has supply of water in South Yorkshire [8]
q98, think of the original place in the bible, and a place where you can get water from. Put them together and get a place in Yorkshire
Hi all, can anyone help with these five?
8.) Mount or region, say
13.) Withdrawal I take out to see what is owed.
18.) 8836
30.) Man, perhaps, I shall shortly hear
59.) Seaweed for torture

Is 8836 in the wrong part of the quiz, should it be later on?

Thanks very much! Adrian

Some clues that may help
8. A mountaineer does this
13. Debit less i
18. Cannot give a better clue that listed above. "Human genetic term" [Think the order is OK]
30. Shorten form of "I shall"
59. Cruel instrument for stretching.

can you offer any help with 72 or 98. There is a clue for 98 above, but I do not know Yorkshire well enough to make sense of it.
Thanks, had got 13 and 59 after I posted the question. Think I've got 8 now, just not sure how it fits in with 'region'.

So, if 8836 is in the right place, it's obviously not Gene then...

The clue above for 98 is not right. It's not the first place in the Bible at all. Think of where a human being starts life, and then add a source of water and put them together (both words begin with a 'w').

72 is another word for a Sunday dinner, and read 'row' as a broad word, i.e. as in row a boat, rather than an argument row.

So we're looking for a genetic term for 8836, but pronounced with a 'g' sound, not a 'j' sound?...

Can anyone hint how we *read* the clue "8836"? Is it a single number (eight-thousand-and-odd), or separate digitis? What does it signify? An index number? Code? Name?

Adrian.
The answer for No8 I had in mind ends with an "e" not "b". It is also another word for area or region, it that helps. Maybe in past times people talked about going to more sunny ones for ther vacations [if that does not confuse yiou more]

Thanks for Clue for no 98. That solves that one. Assume there is a silent letter in the pronouncation !!

from you clue for No 72 I have a word in mind, but not sure how it relates to ham !!

My answer of No18 [8836] is based on it being a code and gene is my answer at the moment [I did a google search for 8836] However I am not certain about there being a silent letter .
The problem with Gene being the answer for 8836 is that it is in the wrong place in the quiz, as phonetically it is pronounced as though it begins with a J, so would appear in the J section of the answers.

Yes, I have got the 'sunnier' one - that's fine!

I think the one about the ham, could just as easily refer to beef, pork, lamb...

I'm not 100% convinced about the shortened form of I shall. What's the 'man' bit got to do with it, and is the answer another word for an island?

If you think along the lines of the where the TT Races are held this might help to make more sense of my clue.

Just realised that I have only a 7 letter solution to No 15. Would you beable to offer any help on the required 5 letter solution

Regards
adwarner: yes, the answer is another word for island, "man" is an example of it, and the shorter form of "I shall" is "I'll", which sounds like it.

I don't think there's a problem with the order of "gene" -- I can think of an ordering that all the other answers fit with and which "gene" would be OK at No 18. However, it does not seem to have a silent letter. Also, I still haven't twigged how 8836 is a code and why it suggests "gene" -- perhaps I am being really dim.....

*** OAP10, and anyone else doing this quiz *** question 15 should be a **7** letter answer, **NOT** 5 as originally printed. My copy of the question sheet has been corrected. I do not know what the marker will do regarding this question if some people have un-corrected question sheets. Anyway, your 7-letter solution for no 15 may well be right after all!

Mooncow.
If you do a Google search for 8836 you will find a number of websites that point to the it being a code for a gene. [Still does not solve the silent letter]

Thanks for the information on No15
