Don't understand - get potholer as explorer but the rest??

Definitely not in the right mindset here!

Please excuse me, AberdeenAl...

Hi shawnee - I hope you see this!

Thank you for your apposite quote last night - I'd just like to say (with no hint of shame or apology to the Bard!) -

"...And he arose, by any other name..."

Guardian crossword is a first for me (father-in-law an avid reader and staying with us for a week!). Only thing I've looked at so far is the crossword. Not sure what that says about my politics?

Know Lie-in-King from regular searches for Sunday Telegraph crossword answers!
I took it as "Pot" for "tea"
and "Holer" as a golfer "who drops in" his ball into the hole?!

shawnee - Gosh! Thank you for the kind words!

Illustrious company, indeed... :-))

Sorry, bear with me a minute - I've admitted previously that the Grauniad compilers & I have never seen eye-to-eye! :-)

Lost my $*!ing line!!

Is the 'H' confirmed? I can't see anything better than Phil's answer ^^ - a 'Potholer' also literally 'drops in'...

I really don't like the Grauniad...

I give up! I expect to have a 100% logical explanation of cryptic clues otherwise I'm not happy. Don't think I'll be doing the Guardian crossword again. I'm a bit of a pedant I'm afraid.

Thanks again to all for assistance.

Apologies, AberdeenAl - not my finest hour...

I've been to the site to get the crossword so that I could confirm the 'H' & 'R' & have done so - the answer has to be 'Potholer'.

My conclusion is that this is one of the worst examples of lazy clue writing I've seen for some time...

Again, sorry... :-((

(You watch - come the morning, someone'll give you a brilliant answer & prove us wrong!)
Potholer is definitely the right answer (or, to be more exact, the required answer). The puzzle can be completed online at the Grauniad website and there's a 'cheat' button for all except the weekend prize puzzles.
