Help identify mermaid film?

I remember seeing this film in the late 70s/early 80s. It was either on BBC2 or Ch4. From what I can remember it showed mermaids drowning crew members of an old tall sail ship (looked like it was set in 1700s). I think there was an underwater cave scene with mermaids and their captured treasure. It was a very 'glossy' film from what I can remember! :) Anyone remember this?
