19ac (PURPLE): I can't see one arrives at this from 'Cardinal's robe Jack left in Peru'. Similarly, 17ac (MAFIA ) and 'Money accepted by fellow in a criminal gang'.

Could someone please explain? Thanks.

Pur= jack ..then p(l)e..left in Peru
Money = m, accepted = a, fellow = f, in = i, +a

Slaney, thank you.

I'd forgotten 'pur' for jack (silly me), and so ended up with (non-word URP) +L in PE.

Just leaves 11ac. to finish.

Thanks again.
Can someone please explain how pur=jack ? in what context?

Thanks :-)
Question Author
Chambers gives pur as the jack in the game of post and pair.
11ac: Rural & uncultured = HICK
Batsman from Zimbabwe = (GRAEME) HICK
Thank you, captainandy...never heard of the game post and Pair....learn something new every day!
Is that jack as in playing cards (knave), or jack as in bowls ??
Can anyone please clarify the answer to 4 down?
I have 2 possible answers, but cannot work out the wordplay!
I have Iowa,
island = I
north of = above
of = o
australian state = wa
I still can't work out the connection with the apostles and lottery, any tips gratefully accepted.
Judypark:
I now see 4down as: Island = (Isle Of Wight) = IOW,
north of Australian = A

If you have all the correct letters (which are in clue order), you will find the lottery at the end of this reference. Hope this helps, if not re-ask!
Last one now, 31d. Can only assume it's worn, but why?
I make it...
W= with
or=yellow
n= number
Thanks slaney, off to post box now.
