The cause and effect were all too obvious but I'm sure the additional "... thus thwarting an attempt to save the planet" must have some additional significance (other than making cause and effect obvious) I'm missing, i.e. do they cut across some possible "solution" I've failed to spot so far? Bit like the Spike Milligan quote a few weeks back; hate it when I think there are loose ends I can't tie up!

.... or perhaps the blanks can be filled by a possible means of saving the planet; I've not considered alternatives.
My advice would be: "Don't look for a difficulty where none exists".

Good morning Tichfield; it is here anyway. Advice accepted - till the next time. It's an unfortunate character trait I must break. I've now spent longer looking for the non-existent than I did on the crossword.
