1 down Person that's unusually fair, in a sense (6).

- i - i - n if my other answers are right.

Lilian seems a bit farfetched and is a proper name! ; Vision is a sense but I can't match it to the clue.
What else?

f(airina) sense-airian
sorry it seems that is not spelt that way is Arian so am well off the mark
Think you were right all along with Lilian as Lily is in Thesaurus as a white (fair) thing and lilian can mean like a lily
I did wonder if it might be titian, though that is more red haired than fair. I can't find an adjective lilian in any of my dictionaries.
I went with vision as this is a sense and if someone is very attractive and therefore "unusually fair" they are said to be a vision.
I've changed my mind, and now agree with Murielmci, vision seems the best . I was thinking of fair haired, not fair in the general sense.

Idon't think I've seen a crossword by Brendan before, but then, I only take the Guardian twice a week.
I have gone with 'vision' as thought it relates to 'a sense' as well as being fair.

Thanks to all.

Murielmci's explanation convinces and clears Brendan (new to me too, as a Saturday only reader) of any suspicion of using a proper name.
