Try your local YELLOW PAGES.
If you dont know anyone that can be recommended, use the Yellow Pages, Thompsons or Local paper. Pick maybe three that are fairly local to you. Go for those who give an address and home/office phone number, not just a mobile. Ask for previous jobs to look at and for recommendations. Set out a firm specification that all can price from on an even basis. If you are worried about commiting yourself, why not take a small chunk of the work and see how they go with that first, so you can get to know your contractor. Once you find someone you like and can trust, stick with them. Some of our customers have been with us for over 30 years and we now working for their offspring.
