Don't know where the 1953 bit comes from, more likely 1593. The "object" which at first sight looks like the artist's palette when viewed at the appropriate angle turns into a skull.

Just out of interest, if anyone's in London I thoroughly recommend nipping into the National Gallery just to see this painting. There are usually a few people in front of it crouched with their heads at funny angles - when you get in exactly the right position it is incredible: the skull just appears in 3D as if floating in front of you.
