Separate = shed take = r. Lodges means put the r into shed.

Morning AQ. Like you I consulted Chambers in vain but after googling 'festering aching and aking' I came across a site. I'm am dubious however- hence my ?
AQ Aking does, tenuously, fit the definition. Kin = related in AG (agony/pain) !
Must be right, if the other letters are right. Thin, though?
I suppose Dull pain related (said) could be Ak?
"a" can mean of or related to ... but it leads nowhere that I can see.
AKING...akin = related to and term - in the sense of an ending - for festering is 'g', ie its last letter.
