A host is an ARMY.
arguably = sounds like .....balmy.

Balm is an aromatic substance / herb, like basil.
Agree, geo0939 and kettledrum ,that the explanation you have given is most likely the correct one, but I am also very taken /amused with the Basil Fawlty/host/barmy version.
I like your reasoning Kettledrum, but I think it more likely that the reference is to Basil Fawlty's 'barminess'. 'Arguably' indicates 'for instance' rather than 'sounds like' - and your theory wouldn't include an actual definition, forbidden in clueing laws!
And just seen ..capital "B" for Basil.
Doesn't cricket have a 'Barmy army'?
