why do nestle put a letter on the inside of the cap of smarties? what made them start doing that?

So that kids can make words with them, I believe.
It's a simple marketing ploy - as a child, if you have one letter. you will want the other 25, and buy and buy tubes until you have the missing ones. As i recall, some letters are deliberately made is smaller quantities to encourage purchase. This has been going on as long as i can remember - certainly when I bout them as a child in the 1950's the letters were going then, so it obviously works if they still do this.
Unless of course people just buy them for the chocolate?

The short answer is that Rowntrees decided that a long time ago, as andy hughes said. I had to mention Rowntrees, the name has all but vanished now; oh how I hate Nestle.
