can anyone help with 23d - type of american music with syncopated rhythm in duple or quadruple metre, 7 letters, s-r-e-t I have googled and looked everywhere to no avail.

I thought of ragtime too but no similarity to the letters given.
I looked for this earlier , and the only word that came anywhere near was stride..plural strides not often used.

Thank you all for your help - my across clues are all correct , so I think I will just have to give up on this one!, but then looking at it again I realise the answer was ragtime, but I had been looking at the wrong clue! It was a bass wooden horn with a long conical tube with fingerholes, which if I remember rightly is a serpent - put it down to my washing machine blowing up yesterday and I mean blowing up!!! Thank you for your help and sorry for being such a dimwit! My dog also pulled me over and I hit my head, so I have some excuse!
