2d Rustic in quest of earth (4) F?RD

As far as I can determine, the only options are FORD and FARD. Personally, I favour FORD but have no sound rationale for doing so!

Any ideas gratefully received?

...or FYRD?

An Anglo-Saxon levy on farmers.???
Yes, I think, "Fyrd". See also "Leidang" or "Leidangr" - sort of conscript farmers' militia to defend, but also agressive (rustics in search of new land, you could say).

Nice one Phil ~ thanks for that.

There's a couple of problems though: EV is highly cryptic and FYRD has no cryptic element to it at all!
Furthermore, I have just looked up "for" in Chambers and have found listed "in quest of".

That gives a strong case for FORD ~ but why "rustic" and why "earth"?
crofter, seeing some of the notes from yesterday there was talk of omitting the letters ST.
Take the word FOREST and this means rustic (Chambers).
fore is right
Sorry -should have added that "e2 is confirmed by "dae" the answer to 16 across.
