I would go for 'roll' - possibly in the sense of 'even out'. You roll out pastry to make it even.
I agree with Christiana.
Have thought again and can't really see you can choose between them. Depends whether speaking applies to even or part.. Possibly the 'a' leads to the speaking applying to the part, but really it's not very satisfactory, I feel

Thanks - I think I'll put roll as the speaking seems attached to part. I did consider even as in rolling flat but it's a bit vague.
I agonised over this - not the best of clues; but have opted for "roll" as that covers the "even" bit. Prob wrong, though ! Can anyone help with 20A -"A better mother (8) ???E???? and 14D "Nominated at the same time as, stated (3,2,4) I only have W as 6th letter. Glad to see you out and about, kk

See No. 2 in the adverbs:
http://www.answers.com/topic/even

If you use 'just' in lieu of 'even' then the clue would read 'Just a speaking part" which would be a role.

Not trying to confuse the issue, just stating that I would use role.
