6a Old Bob ate fish (4) . . . ?H?D I can only think it's SHAD, possibly Sh(for Bob/shilling), and it is a fish, but I'm missing something as this doesn't seem to satisfy clue completely. Would welcome any thoughts please.

You're right with shad. To eat = to have, so had = ate.

Of course, many thanks Qm, I had in mind Sh instead of S for Bob/Shilling, and then "couldn't see the wood for the trees!"
