I don't think this has been answered before

The Times Jumbo 2

11 Down

Is it Four LeaFed Clover or Four LeaVed Clover

My spell checker says only V is right

Yet A Google search gets 24800 Hits for F and 25700 hits for V

Will they accept both ?

Chambers shows both Leafed and Leaved as being appropriate and correct adjectives of the word leaf. You have asked an interesting question which may not be possible to answer with any degree of certainty within this forum.

There's 120 of books on the line here- the question must be answered !!

Although I have already won the Crossword recently ! ; )
If I were going for 120 bucks I would used Leaved. My reasoning?
Leaf=Noun (singular)
Leaves=Noun (plural)
Leafed=Verb, but sometimes used as Adjective and when used as Adj, the definition is: 'having leaves; leaved.
Since leaved would imply plural as in the noun Leaves and we are talking of plural leaves on your shamrock (four), I'd bet on Four-Leaved.
I know the dictionaries give both leafed and leaved, so as sarumite says you are not going to get an answer with any degree of certainty.
But that's the way I'd reason it and bet accordingly.
Good Luck.
Chambers puts -leaved before -leafed, and I think the first spelling is always the preferred one. Especially in this case - if Chambers had no preference surely they'd list the options in alphabetical order.
I, too, would go with four-leaVed clover.
Good luck!

I did go with V. The LEAFED version sounds American - somehow.

I just checked my Canadian Oxford dictionary which does not follow the US spellings.
Leaved is shown as:
1. Having leaves
2. Having a leaf or leaves of a specific kind or number.
As I said last night.
Good Luck
