Not come across this crossword before -- are all the words likely to be very obscure?
Question Author
slaney

the answers are not obscure .... cryptic.

in this weeks puzzle you dont have to work out where to position the answers .... but there are other complications!!

A number of clues contain a misprint of one letter in the definition; there answers are too long for the space indicated by their number. The surplus letters are STRAGGLERS, one by one in order appearing in the subsequent answers (whose indicated lengths are therefore one too great for their answers, but whose clues are otherwise normal) until the next misprinted clue. Stragglers from the last across answer will spill over into the downs and vice versa. The interruptions are always given by a correct letter in a crossing word. Correct letters in misprints in order to spell out how the STRAGGLERS appear.

So it is very straightforward!!!!!!!

thanks --- for Maid

This is from Sun Tel Seven Mag!!!
Question Author
given the above ...

I think that Virgin is Maiden ... shake off the Male = aiden

Help in the clue = aide ie 4 letters

so the letter n is a STRAGGLER that so this letter n moves to the next clue ie 8 down!!

now what is the real answer for 8 down with/without STRAGGLERS!!
