Bought 4 new interior doors for upstairs bedrooms and bathroom, rung a man out of paper, advertised as professional door fitter, came home Friday to find main and back bedroom doors have a gap I can get my hand under when opened or closed,Bathroom also a fair gap underneath,All doors only touch door frame to approx catch height when shut, all catches stick when door handle turned.Hes also knocked 6 small holes in new wallpaper got no nails on new carpet, also knocked sons star trek ring binder collection of books on floor and broke it.Ive rung the person and voiced my opinion of his work, but got the reply that it was ok.Ive had another jioner out who was shocked at the poor fitting standard and said I should ask for a refund for all fitting carried out 70 and a further 50 to buy 2 new doors to replace the ones now damaged.Like your opinions on this please.ps also did not leave a reciept for work carried out.

It begs the question why you paid him if the work wasn't to a reasonable standard. It's going to be much harder to get the money back now..
i understand all the broken stuff etc, but surely if the doors you purchased are too small for the frames, thats your fault not his - for not measuring them properly.

or are you saying he chopped the top and bottom off for no reason?
All services are expected to be carried out with reasonable care and skill, if this isn't the case then you could have either not paid the full amount at the time, or get him to come and put it right for no extra cost, or claim some money back to allow someone else to put it right. Not sure which is best, but if you are thinking of getting someone else in then claiming the cost back, you need to write to him BEFORE you get the other person in, to tell him what your intentions are. If he gets funny about paying it back, you may need to pursue through court (if you are so inclined) so would need proof of everything.

If you wanted to, you can lodge a complaint with Consumer Direct so his local Trading Standards can be informed of the problem. Not that they will do much on one complaint, but if there is a pattern forming then they might.

To try to please all your comments,I expected as you point out work to be to a certain standard, the doors were measured by my self correctly and our door size is 30 x78 inch which is larger than the openings allowing for planing to size.Main door opening is 77 1/2 by 30 door has been chopped to 76 1/2 up to 77 at closing side, which in my eyes is too much of a gap, this is the same on all four but by differing margines.I was at work and left the money for my son to pay him,as if I had been in theres no way he would have got it but I still expected him to leave a reciept for the work and amount charged for it.Have taken photos and shown then to work colleges who cant believe how bad they are.Im no joiner but think I could have done a better job myself time allowing.any more of your comments welcome as I ponder what road to take.THANKS.
The only possible excuse he could have for leaving such a big gap at the bottom is if he thought there was a threshold strip to be fitted later - but he should have asked. (Not applicable if there's one there already.
A good joiner would expect to leave a gap of 6mm worst case, having sought to cut the door for a 3mm gap all round.

Room just been redecorated new carpet and door bar already down all he had to do was measure cut and fit the doors.Like I said Ive never done this type of work but could have made a better job and hes supposed to have 25 years experience which I doubt very much.Would appreciate advise on best course to take ie ask for a full refund of labour charges and extra to replace damaged doors,or part refund,in my opinion he should repay all he charged and the extra to replace the doors as i will have to pay someone to do it right this time. Thanks again all.
The Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 s.13 states that the suppler will carry out the service with 'reasonable care and skill'

If you are determined to seek a refund you could take this cowboy to the small claims court.

Bare in Mind you will need photographic evidence of damage and even better a witness( another joiner) who can state that his workmanship was below minimum standards.
