In 32d I have tried to fit "chameleon" which has 9 letters into 10 letter squares. Where am I going wrong?
I am also lost on 40a Canadian virtuoso Jazz pianist, 33d Instrument for measuring humidity of the air, 38d Direction faced by an actor turning away from the audience and 37d Ancient province of France etc.
I would be most grateful for help.

Many thanks to paulineward, kayakamina and kazizere.
The OED does not give the alternative spelling for chaleleon (chamaeleon) but Chambers does. Of course, this opens the doors to all the other answers I requested and which you have kindly given.
Thanks again, Harrytabby
