Not 'David Letterman' but:
letterman n. A secondary or college student who has earned a letter in a particular activity, especially a varsity sport.
(to 'take off' = imitate)
Sorry Dinky, that still doesn't stack up . . . .

Thanks johnalex - it appears that david letterman is an impersonator.
Yes, Dinky I used to watch 'Dave' on 'The Late Show' but wouldn't decribe him as an impersonator, more a chatshow comedian, hence my remark. But hey let's not worry - have a great new week! ja
ETA TIM I about .
That's quite brilliant swannbaker - well done! Sometimes "The Sunday Crusader" is particularly obscure and one often has to peek at "His Squire" for the quick solution! Mind you, Squire's clue for 9a 'Airedale Terrier' is 'Small Dog' which Chambers and Collins define as large, so who can you trust?!
Question Author
Thanks for the correct explanation, swannbaker. ( I did not know eta was a Greek letter.)
