I feel the answer is Go For The Jugular ! (ie vein) but cannot see the entire wordplay.

Thank you pldcav Mr Thribb is a new one on me not being an Eye reader. Egypt I should have got!
E J Thribb (17 1/2) is not likely to be alluded to in a Times or Telegraph crossword, I suspect.

Yes I agree. That is what stumped me because I can usually complete the puzzles without too much trouble. I am now reading up on Mr Thribb (171/2)!
Coincidentally this is the second time this month that an 'Eye' reference has foxed me- it had to be explained to me that 'Brenda' was in fact the Queen! K
