The favoured answer yesterday for 28d Fast getting a string of (5), was " wired ".
Whilst not disputing this, as I have no better answer, can somebody fully explain logic??

I don't do this puzzle so don't know what letters you've got.
w - r - d ? If not, what about 'fleet'. ? A number of ships, cars, aircraft etc. String is used in the same context for racehorses etc.

Grateful thanks to both kettledrum and kayakamina ....... I wrongly had Operatic for 30a (along with several other ABers)! .......... but was not happy with wired, so now really pleased that confusion has been cleared.
