My geography is appalling and my crytpic solving isnt much better but have struggled through 99 of these so just this one left
The stakes in certain games (5)
has to fit alphabetically between Pontefract and Portsmouth

Don't really understand the clue etc but if it's a place, does Poole fit?
Pool is the name for stakes for some games, and Poole is a town on the south coast, but whether or not the additional "e" is allowed in the answer, I don't know.

I did think Poole - mainly cos it was the only 5 letter place name between the 2 but thanks MacSmith for the explanation and thanks MountainJoe for the answer
I also put Poole, it is another word for stakes in some games
