Right i work at this place that makes steel roofing materials on mill plant machines. Basically a big coil of steel is on the end of the machine and it goes through the machine and the steel is wettened with this oily watery substance? then the steel goes through these big cog roller type things shape them into rods etc. I was wondering how is it that the steel goes into the machine all floppy and limp and comes out really tough and literally unbendable? Does anyone know how these machines work as im not aware that theres any hot rollers in there. And what is the oily watery substance that is put onto the steel before it is shaped and what is the purpose of the oily substance? any advice be great im just really curious!
Cheers :)

And as for the 'oily substance', see here
If you form a sheet of paper into a cylinder it will support a book.

Shape determines the direction in which forces are transmitted in a material. When you press against the surface of an egg the surface force causes compression of the surrounding material distributing the force out along the surface of the egg.
