Having solved 99% of this puzzle and not wanting to give too much away (at this moment) I have the four items for the mantelpiece and have got the links with two of them but am stuck on the other two:
themeword beginning with "O" and with R?NG and ?AR? and themeword beginning with "E" and links with CATHIE and ?OL?Y . Any ideas ?

I will give help at any time, and, nobody else has come up with a query on this crossword, yet. Perhaps others like to solve things first, or try to, before asking for help. It's not very often that I ask for assistance but have given plenty of answers to others in the past.
Hi Ulysses - I'm at much the same place you are. Except for the Es: I'm assuming it's just "diminutive girls' names" (giving Molly or Polly). My closest for the O is that it's slang for cash, so maybe currencies (mark's okay - still looking for a r-ng!).

This is the reason I hate T&V puzzles!
I wonder if the 'O' shouldn't be interpreted as as round, which would explain 'ring' reasonably satisfactorily......and then ? mark ? - being round ( coin ) . Not entirely happy!

Hi kettledrum,
johnalex has worked out the obscure link : as you say, "O" for ring in O-scar and "mark" for the scar !
Very devious !
