'Ahead of time' is the best I can do - which describes Cronus (a head of time) but not really the round the bend bit.

The letter said 'Given the misplaced ingenuity of your (the telegraph's) cryptic crossworders , I offer the following clue Cronus........'


Misplaced ingenuity?

Maybe referring to this?


"Chronos (often mystically confused with the Titan Cronus) was the personification of time."

Well, I'm certainly guilty of confusing Cronus with Chronos! Still no nearer the answer, though perhaps it isn't a valid clue...
